Hi,
well i have the following problem:
I want to remove the button "up" from the toolbar.
This is of course no problem through the costumize option, but the customize option has to be disabled
(administrative reasons).
Well i did it this way http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/639
to remove the option successfully. But i have now the problem that the explorer doesnt use my personal settings (with "up" removed). He is using the default settings.
So my questions is:
Is there a way to get this done "my way"? :)
thanks and cu

I'm not sure what toolbar you are talking about, but be advised that even though they look the same the toolbars in Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and the shell browser (the windows that open when you double-click My Computer or Network Neighborhood) are three different toolbars. Changes made to one will not affect the other.
You will have to customize all three to your liking before locking them down. Also, be sure you close each window in it's customized state before trying to lock them down.

hm ok here we go again.
I want to remove the "Up" Button from the windows explorer toolbar. And then make it impossible for a user to change the toolbar. But if i do this like mentioned here:
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/639,the windows explorer uses the standard buttons(default settings) with "Up" not removed.
So is there a way to remove the "Up"button permanently and disable the option to change the toolbar.
Thanks for the answers!

Ok, I've got it. Been working on it all day and finally figured it out.
Here are some things you should be aware of about the process:
There is no easy tweak that I have found. The solution involves modifying and replacing a system file. That being the case there is the potential to screw the system up permanently (as in "NO BOOT FOR YOU!") if you don't take the proper precautions.
Also, since a system file is modified the change is 'permanent', meaning that it is a big pain in the **** to do and undo.
Since it is a system file change, the 'restriction' will be for ALL users.
The change seems to have had some undesirable side effects, namely changes in some context menu handling. The side effects seem to be benign, but there may be some deeper effects that I haven't had time to come across yet.
If after reading this you still want to give it a try, let me know and I will post all the gory details.

I am going to lay out the entire process in step-by-step detail. That means this is a long post, but given the ways this can go wrong I don't want to <font color=green>***</font color=green><font color=blue>u</font color=blue><font color=red>me</font color=red> anything. The one exception to this is that I am assuming that you have a single operating system, that the root directory of the OS is at C:\WINNT, and that you are of the Administrators group. I printed this out and went through it on an unaltered machine to the letter, as if I had never done anything like this before and it went OK. If you have any experience tweaking your machine you should have no problem with this.
BTW, I should mention that I lied to you earlier in this thread. I said that the IE, WE, and shell browser are three different toolbars. This is incorrect. Windows Explorer and the shell browser use the same button toolbar. These are, however, three different menu/toolbar configurations. The Windows Explorer configuration and the shell browser configuration share the same button toolbar component.
Tools you will need:
Hex editor (if your service pack is newer than SP1). If you don't already have one, there will be many opinions about which one to use, but I used <a target="_blank" href=http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-2352-7621132.html?tag=lst-0-16>THIS ONE</a>. I had never used a hex editor before and had no idea what to expect, but this one required no learning or special knowledge. I was in and out in no time.
