History: my roommate's computer motherboard fried and took down his powersupply with it. So he bought a new processor/mobo. Giving me his old Athlon 1200.

Problem: My computer starts acting up randomly and opening simple programs will take endless amounts of time. Then when i shutdown and restart i can hear my computer turn on and all the lights turn on but the monitor doesn't come on. I have to turn the CPU off for around 25-40 minutes b/f it'll boot back up again.

Any suggestions?

system specs:
mobo: gigabyte ga-7zx (isa)
1200 athlon
384 mb ram
32mb ddr Matrox G400 MAX dual display
XP Pro

Thanks guys...hope you can help

i believe i have a 300w powers upply (does that make sense?) and 2 sticks of ram...1 pc133 'crucial' stick of 256 and another random pc133 of something...is there anyway to check what brand they are? I"ll open my case and write down the info if req'd.

Let me know.

Thanks for the reply!

300 watt power supply seems a bit light for the rig you describe. If it were mine I would add a 400 watt or more power supply.

One more thing. Was that Athlon 1200 your roomie gave you originally on the mobo that was fried? If so, it also could be damaged.

Has the high speed fan and heatsink been removed from the processor. If yes did you replace the thermal pad or thermal past with new past. If you tried to use the old it could be overheating. You should be able to check the temp in the BIOS, or use a program like motherboard monitor to check it while your PC is in use.
