Ghost in the machine (VOLUME CONTROL) (W2K)

I have recently inherited a laptop and for some reason the volume slider will not stay where you put it.....i.e. you turn the volume up and it reduces itself back to zero again...im presuming this is some sort of anti annoyance feature....but i find it highly annoying....how does it work??? any ideas???

When does it reset? Immediately? After 10 minutes? After a reboot?

If it's after a reboot, it could be that some program is loading that's causing the reset.

immediately...you slide it up......and it slides itself back down....whether youre holding it up or not

You might try reinstalling the driver for your sound card.
