I suppose I am also interested in this answer for other Window versions as well, like XP.

You know when you change a setting or install new software and it asks you for the WinX cd. Suppose you have the cab files sitting on your hard drive, how to tell point windows to automatically look towards that directory everytime it needs systems files from the cd?

I guess it would be a registery setting, but if someone could tell me which one and what setting that would be fantastic.

The 'brands' usually drop the files in the Win95/Win98 folder on the CD into C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. I've been successful in locating several entries in the Registry when doing a search on D:\Win98 [replace D with your CD drive letter] and replacing it with C:\Windows\Options\Cabs. With WinXP, setup will prompt if it is desired to copy the files to the hard drive, the folder is C:\i386, the majority of the files are not .cab.

Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement

For win9x/2K (don't have access to XP to compare):

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Set up

String name = "SourcePath"

The proceeding was from the "For What It's Worth" files, which by definition may be worthless. Take with a grain or ten of salt.
