Go to IE Options/General tab/temporary internet files/settings button. Check For Newer versions of stored pages section.

Pat, if you want to insure seeing the most recent page you have no choice but to set it for "always". For speed, "never". Everything else is a compromise /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

Yes, I use every visit to a page. I think it offers the fastest performace. IE sets it to Automatically by default. After switching, it is much better.

I did not respond to your poll because I do not know the correct answer.
The setting: "Check For Newer versions of stored pages section." is referring to the stored pages.
I have my IE set to clear the TIF folder when the browser is closed so when I visit a site, as far as my cached files are concered, it is my first visit.
Every time I visit Winguides the forums page, although similar, is different each time I arrive. Especially the forum post counts. So, in this case, I want the page to be fresh each time I arrive.
Google's page does not change much but on cable it opens in about a second and a half anyway. But for Google it would perform better to not check for a newer version.
For my use it does not matter which setting because I always need it to be fresh upon arrival.
Mine remains set as Automatic for lack of a better choice.
When reading the IE Help file I find these settings are more for offline browsing or particularly the stored cached files.
I do not store them.
As an experiment I will try 'Never' to see if it takes less time not looking for newer pages then what is (is not) stored.
I will post back.

Okay, I must say that using Never is definately faster for each and every individual page.
I think I will keep the setting for a time.
I do find that I must get used to the difference.
When I reply to a post and return to the thread then my reply is not shown and I must refresh the screen. In this case the added refresh takes the one step longer but the page still loads faster then if it had to check for a previously stored page first.
In this case there was a previously stored page but it does not look for it and if I want to see it then I have to refresh.
The up side is that I probably reply to about 5% of the posts if that many so the speed gain is quite large.
I will bookmark this post, leave the "Never" setting for a while and post back with my findings and opinions.
At this point in time I would like to say Thank you Pat for prompting me to experiment in this issue.
Note: Of course; if you are on a dial up and do not clear the TIF folder after each browser session then setting Never would not be a viable solution for speed.

Hey Report_2,
Thanks for taking the time to look into this. Even though we'll figure it out, I decided to post this poll so people who wern't aware would have a better understanding.
Thanks again,
POBrien

I have changed mine back to Automatically.
The amount of times I must refresh outweighs the speed gain.
