Can't seem to find this "tweak" posted on this site and I thought some may be interested in it.
This setting allows you to go DIRECTLY (As opposed to being given the choice of searching
the internet) to the program list when you want to use the "open with" dialog box which is shown when an unknown file type is opened.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\System
Create a new DWORD value named NoInternetOpenWith and give it a value of 1.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer
Create a new DWORD value named NoInternetOpenWith and give it a value of 0.
Cheers.

Something really weird here !
When I went to find those NoInternetOpenWith values in my registry, they are gone ???
I did find :
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1161744426-480437244-4168701361-1006\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer
InternetOpenWith REG_DWORD = 0
AND
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer
InternetOpenWith REG_DWORD = 0
Is this normal?
It still works the way it is supposed to . i.e no option to search the internet for a program to open with.
So, why does the tweak appear to work and yet the values that I entered are no longer present?
Cheers.

I would do a registry search for the Name NoInternetOpenWith I can't see it working without a Data Value of 1
As for it suddently appearing in HKEY_USERS----1006, when you entered the Name into HKEY_CURRENT_USER this was automatically entered into 1006 which at the time was the CURRENTly Logged on USER.
Not quite the newbie I used to be, but still prone to the odd mistake :D

That is what I am saying Dirk.
I DID search forNoInternetOpenWith and they are not present anywhere.
Maybe the only value that needs changing was/is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer
InternetOpenWith REG_DWORD = 0
Is this a default reg entry? Or was it somehow changed by the original "tweak"? I have made no other "manual" changes here.
I did accomplish this with the method in the original post though.
Thanks for helping Dirk /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

I have done a full search for "InternetOpen" and found only the two "NoInternetOpenWith" I originally entered and this after a re-boot. The "InternetOpenWith" Names are not present by default. If I change the Data Values to 0 on the NoInternetOpenWith, the question whether I want to go online is asked.
I did a search on Google and it came up with both entries at Kelly's Corner.
EDIT by Dirk
Just reading Kelly's Corner page and he/she uses both entries. NoInternetOpenWith on HKEY_LOCAL with a Data Value of 1, and InternetOpenWith on CURRENT_USERS with a Data Value of 0.
Edited by Dirk_Diggler on 02/26/03 18:04.

Thanks for your help Dirk, I can see my mistake now. I had been using it on my account since the end of December and never thought twice about rechecking it before I posted. Sorry./images/forums/icons/frown.gif
The way I posted the original one does work for the current user, but it is improper.
Thanks again.
Cheers.

Hi rj,
absolutely no need to say sorry, at the end of the day the tweak works /images/forums/icons/smile.gif although theoretically it shouldn't /images/forums/icons/tongue.gif
I remember it now when you posted it in this thread:-

I never noticed the oddity back then /images/forums/icons/shocked.gif
