Until now I did not know what System Restore was. I have been prompted to use it for a troubleshooting purpose. When I launch it, either through Start-Programs-Accessories-etc. or Start-Run-Msconfig-etc and select either (1) restore my computer to an earlier time or (2) create a restore point, I get the message "system restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer and then run system restore again". I have done this many times without success. Also, it seems to me that no restore points have been automatically created on the previous points calender. My PC is a two-year old 5WV296 Presario. Thanks in advance for any help towards getting my System Restore operating. Geo. King

do you happen to have system.dat and users.dat files at filoppy or other location? if so, copy them back to c:\windows
You may have to boot it with a floppy first.
Good luck!

Thanks homeflash for your quick reply. I do not have the two files you mentioned on floppy and could not find them on my PC. I am not familiar with their use
Cheers.
Isadore,
Have a look at this:
System Restore Cannot Run Until You Restart the Computer</font color=red> (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=274092><font)
Good luck,

If Nana's suggestion doesn't work,
1) Disable System Restore (this will delete all of your restore points, but it doesn't matter because it isn't working now anyway)
2) Reboot
3) Reenable System Restore
9 times out of 10 this will solve the problem. If it doesn't, then you'll need to gain access to the System Volume Information Folder(s) and manually delete all files.

i heard that you need a fix from the microsoft website so that system restore can be used.

l had the same problem with WINME. Its evidently a bug in WINME which stops system restore recognising dates after September 2001. The solution is to go to Microsofts Update site and download the patch.

or you can go to housecall.antivirus.com ( no www.) try it, it might solve the problem
Or, since the fix I recommended was over a month ago we can assume the problem was solved.
