So I must have installed something that messed with my winsock.dll. Now, when I try and log on to the internet through my cable modem I get a "no correct version of winsock" error. I uninstalled the programs I had installed and nothing. Can someone please help? Can I install it again somehow?

You could try to do a system restore to before this problem occurred. I was going to suggest running System File Checker, but I'm not sure, can one of you other Guru's here on the boards tell me if XP even has SFC? I've never had need to try to run it before. By th way, correct size of winsock.dll on XP should be 3k.
