Hi,

I have W98SE installed on my machine. I own a Windows ME Upgrade disk. I want to install the compressed folders feature from ME on my W98SE machine without installing ME. Is that possible?

It seems possible to me since compressed folder came out on the Plus! 98 pack.

Yes, it may be.

You can open regedit on an ME machine and drill down too HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup\OptionalComponents

find the entry for compressed folders and add it to the 98 registry with a value of 0 (for uninstalled). Also notate, the .inf file within the reg entries. Copy that .inf file from ME to the 98 windows\inf folder. Then go to the windows setup tab on 98 and add a checkmark to the new entry and hopefully 98 will prompt for the disk in which case you would put in the ME disk. (I have not tested this out).

You may just want to go with DriveSpace on 98 or use winzip instead.

Hi Dan,

Thank you. I just started myself. The main inf file is appletpp.inf. Im checking through it and there are more things that need to be done. There's a .dll file required and a regsrv command that needs to be completed and probably other steps. I'll post back soon.

Ok here's the steps.

Required from ME. Compressed Folders must already be installed so that you can copy these files from ME's windows\system folder... or you can extract the files from the applicable win cab. win16 houses the Zipfldr.dll file. I haven't checked the other cabs for the other two files.

Zipfldr.dll
Dzip32.dll
Dunzip32.dll

Paste them into the windows\system folder on 98
Open a command prompt on 98 and move to the windows\system folder

c:
cd\
cd windows system

Then type in and execute this command

regsvr32.exe zipfldr.dll

That's it. The Compressed Folder option will appear in the right click Send To option.

When you want to remove the Compressed folders option go back to the command prompt and type in and execute this command.

regsvr32.exe /u zipfldr.dll

*Note

I still haven't figured out how to make the Compressed Folder option appear in the windows setup tab.

Thanks for those steps.

But when I try and SEND TO compressed folders the hard drive bumps but nothing really happens.

Thanks again,

Tom

Thats amazing. I just tested it out 3 times. Everything works perfect. If you have a 3rd party zipping program installed, uninstall it and test again.

ok, I unistalled WinZip and when I send to compressed folders it looks like it starts zipping (a dialogue box with a progress meter) and then it stops. Maybe I'm not understanding what should happen. I want the folder that I click on to tunr into a compressed folder in Windows Explorer. Is that what you get?

yes indeed. Exactly how it works on ME is how it works now on 98.

Well, I re-booted and the compressed folder showed up!

Thanks for the help!

Now if you can only learn how to install it through Setup! <just joking>

That's great news. I thought about the reboot step but decided to omit it since I didn't have to use it on all 3 machines I tried. Im glad it worked out. LOL. Actually I would like to figure that out myself.

Patrick,

You've probably found this out for yourself by now, but just in case. . .
Both dzip32.dll and dunzip32.dll are in Win_11.cab.

Seems like a lot of work just to get compressed files when one can use WinZip. OTOH, WinZip isn't free. Most important reason of all? You live for challenges just like this! /images/forums/icons/wink.gif

Hi Nana,

Actually, I stopped after win16.cab and hoped that someone else would finish off. Thanks for posting that info.

Yes, so true. I have always used winzip and never really even took a look at compressed folders. Now that I have, I myself, like it. I didn't know it offered password protect and the extraction process is faster than winzip. Jeez, I guess my honesty leaves me as an open book... You know me too well. When I saw this post, my eyes started bugging out. :)

Patrick,

No problem. It's kind of neat looking at what lurks under the covers of *.CAB folders. Mind you, I may have had to quit if I hadn't found those files within the first 10 or so that I looked at.

How are the eyes?

Nana,

LOL, yes the eyes start to see two monitors when there's only one. not good. Once I made a .doc file which contained the entire win98 file list for all of the cab files. It took so long, I'll never do that again.

One of the magazines did it when Win95 came out but I haven't seen any such list lately. I used WinZip to extract Win95 through WinME and made lists quite some time ago, kept them safe so I wouldn't have to do them again. Really can come in handy at times.

Im glad you posted that info Bert. It would be great to get a copy of 95 and ME if ever needed.

Patrick,

I'll give you $100. (CDN) to take WinMe off my hands. Is that enough?
All right, I'll go as high as $250. (CDN), but not a dime more, OK?

What the heck, you can have the computer as well, plus I'll throw in an extra $500.(USD). That's absolutely my FINAL offer.

LOL Nana,

I know what you mean. I have ME installed on my laptop but I only use it for testing out programs. It's much safer that way.
