I am working on an issue with a Gateway Desktop running Windows 98. I was trying to reformat the drive and discovered that the drive had been compressed. I tried to decompress the drive, but it failed. I think some system files my have been corrupted or removed. I created a "Start up disk" with another computer running Win 98. How can I use the Start up disk to open Windows? Also, I have replaced the CD Rom becuase I was receiving "Disk not ready" error messages. How can I access the CD Rom from DOS to install a new copies of Win 98 or use the recovery CD?

You may want to try FDISK to remove and re-create the partitions. FDISK can be found on the W98 SE bootdisk that can be downloaded from here: www.bootdisk.com
I'm not familiar with compressed drives so I don't know how FDISK will handle it, but it may be worth a try.

Another program to try would be Ranish partition manager. This can be found at http://www.ranish.com. It is a free download but make sure you follow all the instructions.
