I want to run a duel boot system using win98 and XP pro. I have a Quantum 30 gig HDD that I plan to partion to run both OS's on. Win98 will be the primary OS. Any sugestions on the size of the two partions I should create? How many mb's are in 1 gig? Will I have boot problems if I make the first partion larger than 8 gig's? Any help will be greatly appricated. Thanks in advance

You should have no problem dual-booting, I do it on 2 notebooks with 20GB drives/10GB partitions each, Win98SE & Win2000 on one and Win98SE and WinXP HE on the other.

1GB is 1000MB in the simple explanation, slightly more in the complicated version.

WinXP needs a minimum of 1.5GB to install.

Put Win98 on the first/C: partition and WinXP on the second/D: partition.

If you want both Operating Systems to have access to both partitions, create and format the partitions with Win98/FAT32.

You can dual boot or multi boot with all of the Windows OS's if you wish. I currently run Win98se, Win ME, XP pro & 2000 pro. If you want to find out more visit my website http://www.kcsdorset.co.uk.
You can e-mail me direct using the link in my website if you want to.

Thanks, I setup duel boot only to find that my sound card has no XP drivers. I removed XP (fdisk) and started over with 98 only. At this point I have fdisked 4 times and reloaded Win98, 1 primary partion only. The problem I have now is the only way my system will boot and not loose the vid. drivers and give me a Error 6 (sound) is to selective startup without "system.ini" and "win.ini". This is driving me nuts! I have never had this problem untill I tried duel boot. At this point I have ran SFC, Registry Checker, Scandisk and defrag.. No problems found. All the hardware installed is the same that I have used for over a year (except Vid. Card and I had no trouble with it prior to duel boot) everything is in the same slotsas before, I clear the BOIS prior to fdisk and come up with the same problem everytime. Any help would be greatly appricated. Thanks in advance.

SadisticWarrior,

Have you looked in your system.ini and win.ini files to see if you can find out why they are causing the probelm?
Aside from that, check back here as the others are far more experienced that I and may have more ideas for you.

At the A: prompt , type , sys c: and then press ENTER.
