View Full Version : How to maintain DSL link between logins? (W2K)

Greetings folks,

I have a single W2K machine with a small number of user accounts (family members) and a single ADSL account.

Each time a user logs on the ADSL link is re-established, then disconnected when they log-off. However, my ISP is a bit flaky and a connection is not always achieved.

Is it possible to have Windows establish a connection at start-up and retain this through several logon/off cycles?

Thanks in advance,
NJD

As far as I know, this cant be done. When going through a shutdown/logoff/restart, Windows shuts down all/most of its services to prepare for that. If its that important to you, you could invest in a cheap router. The router would maintain the connection 24x7, so you wouldn't have any reconnect issues.

What authentication client are you using?

Well, I'm not sure I can answer that clearly - I'm a novice at this.

I make the link to my ADSL ISP by using 'dial up' setting I created with the Wizard in the W2K Networking folder. Any authentication is done using standard Windows components - I've added none.

Apologies if that doesn't answer your question, but thanks for your help.

Thanks. I've given serious thought to getting a router. It may well happen.

One question though: when ICS is enabled on a host, but no-one is logged in. Do the clients still get a connection? If so, how is that service implemented on the host machine?

Many thanks,
NJD.

OK, do any of these ring a bell? WinPoet, Enternet, or RASPPPOE?

Oh, and who is your ISP?

Certainly rings a bell. I use PPPoA (as opposed to oE).

I'm with Pipex (in the UK)

how is XP supposed to know that after one user logs off the next one that will be logging on is a user with enough rights for ras ? each user has got to authenticated and only allowed to do what their account allows them to.
