i have my main 40 gig c drive, and a seperate 80 d drive. my question is: is it possible to keep the seperate d drive from running and only come on when i need to put something on it (i only use it for storage purposes) so it doesnt get the extra wear and tear from spinning?

even though it's powered up it isn't spinning when it's not in use or being used by another program. Short of disconnecting the data/power cable there isn't a way unless you find some third party program that can control the hardware at the subsystem level.

heard of the hard drive racks? I used to use it. You push it in and pull it back out when you want to. But it may not be a good idea if you pull your drive out all the time... it may heard it.
i would suggest you do it on bios. Just leave it not detected or selected.

in use or not the drive keeps spinning.- unless you configure your power management features otherwise.
