Hello,
I was uninstalling a sound driver the other day and accidentley deleted the files Vmm32.vxd and mmdevldr.vxd from the Windows\System folder.
Total mistake!!! I couldn't boot back up with those files gone, along with the 38 other critical system .vxd files that got deleted due to the deletion of above stated files. Those 38 .vxd's are linked to the Vmm32.vxd. Ok so I recovered them all from the Win98SE installation Cd and put them back where they go. So I can run windows somewhat ok now except that folders take days to open. Even some files (Especially IE6).
My question after all that is: Are the files I mentioned above written to during normal windows operations or are they Read-Only sys files needed at boot. I want to know if they are the exact same files on the Win98SE installation cd or not. This problem started immediatley after I deleted and recovered or I should say Replaced those files.
What can I do about this issue. I wouldn't be asking this if I didn't have a multi-boot setup with WinXp Pro Corp, I would have just reinstalled Win98SE. I think that is what really needs to be done! But any input from someone who is technically experienced with Win98 would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much,
Jeremy

First, if you re-install Win98 there is a very good chance you will lose the multi-boot, Win98 rewrites the Master Boot Record upon install.

Did you run sfc from the Start, Run box to check for missing/corrupt files?

The first entry about vmm32.vxd at http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/vmm32.html (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=vmm32.vxd>http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=vmm32.vxd</a>).

Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement

I think vmm32.vxd is one file sfc can't sort out. Nor can you copy it from the cd and expect it to work fully. I'ts built in situ, and can be rebuilt e.g amended/updated - but this requires a good one in the first place.

The vmm32.vxd on the CD is a shell which is updated during Windows installation. The only way you can replace vmm32.vxd is by reinstallation (unless you have backed it up somewhere, of course)

SFC is no good with this one file. (Vmm32.vxd) I have spoken with friend and I have to reinstall, due to the fact that I have more problems now than just what I posted. THe main one being that Autodesk Land Development Desktop R2 isn't working properly AT ALL. I HAVE to have this working everyday and every momement, critical for my job. But I've come to the conclusion anyways that I don't want Win98SE on my computer any more.
Thanks again for the responses!
