I have a Delkin Devices Reader-12 and trying to install it on Windows 98. I have installed all the drivers and everything and plugged in to USB. It is supposed to appear as a Removable Disk Drive in My Computer, but when I go there it does not show up. I went to my Device Manager to see if it was being recognized. It shows up under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and says it is working properly. When I look under "Disk Drives" it does not show up!
I have a A:, C:, and 2 CD-ROMS labeled F and G. I tried remapping the CD-ROMS to another letter which worked fine but the reader still wouldn't show up!!
Any ideas?

Is it still missing after inserting media? I had a Smart Media reader that wouldn't appear as a drive untill I had inserted a card.

It doesnt matter if a card is inserted or not. What is really strange is that it says it is working properly in device manager under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers!

What you see in device manager is that the USB interface between the card reader and the PC is functioning correctly. As Josh says, it shouldn't show as a drive unless there is media inserted. I would focus on the card interface. Look for damaged/dull pins etc.

I talked to tech support at Delkin and they said that the disk drive should show up anyways, no card needs to be inserted.

I wouldn't believe all you hear from a first level tech. I had a look at the Delkin site and it states that the card should be in the adapter before plugging it into the USB slot.
Smartmedia™ Questions
Q. How do I install the Smartmedia™ card into the SSFDC adapter?
A. The gold side of the Smartmedia™ card should be facing up towards the top of the adapter. The card should be installed before you insert the adapter into the slot.
I would look at the connections in the adapter.

that's because you could cause damage plugging it it to a device with power running round it ...usb doesn't mind but the device will ! I don't know how you are supposed to get it working but the Q and A doesn't throw any light on it at all.
Personally I don't believe any level of tech .. I give due consideration.
