My cousin installed IE 6 and his pc now crashes at every boot with 'explorer' errors.
His pc was due for a reformat at some stage - that stage is now.
I've recovered his documents via DOS by booting up with his 98 bootdisc -
where do I find the OE mail and address book- that's all he needs saving
TIA

only one solution of many...

edit the system.ini file , boot section , so that the shell=explorer.exe becomes shell=progman.exe

this should start and allow you to do stuff such as backup - you will get the old file manager rather than explorer.

You can find the OE mail files here C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{55B5FE40-FF3F-11D4-9A4F-A4C2517EE732}\Microsoft\Outlook Express and the address book here C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

Joe is correct about the location of the mail folders, however, the long string of {hex numbers} will be different on each computer for each identity.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Tried the system.ini change 1st and booted with the floppy in and got to a strange screen with an arrow pointing
to F1 [all others, F2-12 gave no response]?? F1 gave a black screen with 1962 on it - nothing else.
Don't know anything about 'progman.exe' as you've no doubt gathered !!
Booting from the hard disc saw it crash at the same point as explorer - just as the windows music starts.
It then prompted me to reinstall Windows.

Found the Address book OK, and copied it to floppy, however, her inbox folder was just too big to get on to
a floppy and was left.

Reinstalled Win98 - she has a 4GB hard disc, 32MB RAM + Pentium 200. The memory is that old I don't recognise
what type it is - me being used to PC100 & DDR - so I'll need to get a manual and see if her mobo can take any more.

It really is soooooo slow - and all I've put on is Word & Excel from her Office 97.
