Is there any utility out there that shows what files were placed where after one installs new software? (And likewise, what was taken out when one removes software.) OR does the Add/Remove Software Control Panel provide a log like this?

Also, is there a tutorial that explains the purpose of the various system files in Win 98?

as far as books go there are a plethera try your local libray and start with something simple windows for dummies is a good start the book stores are full of books on windows also whatch techtv call for help and the screen savers these two shows are devoted to computers

There's a utility called InCtrl5 that monitors software installation and allows you to determine the files that are added, modified and the registry changes.
