View Full Version : speed-up modem connection (WXP)
Hi,
I want to speed up my modem connection by changing the 'properties' parameter in de [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Modem\0000] system key (as explained on http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1164/). But I can't find the specific key. Is it because I have XP as OS? If anyone has the answer, that would be real great, because then I can download a little bit faster then 5 kb/s!!!
Tenx!

BitB,
Sorry, the tweak is for 9x systems, not XP. Maybe one of the other, more experienced members can give you some idea of what to do with your XP system.

Also, have a look here:

Yes it's because you're running XP.
Open regedit and drill down to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000
You'll see the Properties value within

Tenx 4 the help. Found the parameter, and changed it. The only problem is that it doesn't seem to work. Connection isn't faster at all.
Anyhow, tenx again!

as well as that parameter, did you also follow the instruction to change the com port speed to use the higher setting now available to it?
although the modem talks to the outside world, the pc software (comms apps), talk to the modem by using a com port. the hardware which does this is a UART chip, and this is sometimes where a bottleneck occurs....the modem can be made to wait for the uart to finish with one lump of data before anymore can be passed to it. traditionally uarts max transfer speed was 115k, but got faster e.g. by use of compression. hence doubling to 230, then 460 and 920.
remember also that kbps is often kbits per sec, whereas downloading files might be reported as k bytes per sec. also, conn speed involves 'all' the data transferred not just that which makes up the downloaded file itself !
