need help finding text as hex :^( (W98)

im trying to find information in the registry i know is there- if i open user.dat as a text file, i see it- part text, part gibberish; but if i search in regedit- the data doesnt show up. I've tried hex editors but they dont help- i see the text and corresponding hex, but that doest show where the information is located in the registry.
Here's what i want to do: im trying to point a game- interstate76 - to search for the play cd on a virtual cdrom- user.dat as text shows the game, gibbersih, E:\ (physical cd drive), but nowhere can i find a reference to "E:\" and this game in the registry.
does anyone know how to find this in the registry?

Forget the hex editor,

Not all programs will allow you to do this.
Find the registry entries pertaining to the game and look for "path" information or "InstallDir" or similar.

This information is usually a string value.
