I removed my network adapter for a while. When I installed it again XP thought it was another adapter. This makes it impossible to change back to the old IP adress, because XP tells me that there is already a network card that has that adress. How do I remove this old adapter settings?

technically, the card does not have an ip address - although common sense usage usually treats it that way !
In truth, it is the protocol to be used by/with the card - TCP/IP which is configured with that ip. Before physically removing the nic you should remove the device/drivers etc from the OS config.
check any old connections still existing.

Optain the most recent drivers for the adapter (from the manufacturer on the net most likely).

Go to device manager and update the drivers with the new ones.

You can also search the registry and remove the bogus adapter entries. Im on 98 at the moment. I'll boot over to XP soon and give you some areas to check.

Actually, Simon has it right here.

First use System Restore to create a new restore point. Then check for your old adapter and remove accordingly. Then search the reg for any remaining emtries related to the class id that correspondes to the old adapter. Remove as needed.
