I have just connected 3 pc's into a Zonet Router then into my cable connection. With very little tweaking everything worked a treat, only problem is, if I leave them connected for any length of time they all lose connection. The internet connection light on the router is still there flashing merrily but I have to power down and up the router to resume connection on the pc's. Are there any settings I can change ? either in the router settings or XP. Thanks for any replies in advance :)

could it be a dhcp renewal issue ? note the ip of all involved including router when working ok, then compare when not working.
try release and renew with ipconfig from stalled client.

It seems you're right with the dhcp renewal, is there a way to avoid that or something I can change to stop it ?

If you have to keep renewing then the problem either relies in the router firmware or the ISP's router ip block. Call them to determine whether other customers are having the same problem. Talk to tier 2 tech support only. Have them monitor the block of ip's that are included in the ip address that you receive from them. Also check the web site for the maker of the router to determine if there is a more recent firmware upgrade.

Ok I updated the firmware and now when the router resets itself it reconnects again keeping the same ip's but still isn't much use as the programs being used still disconnect :( ISP wont help with networking. Is a 1meg cable service enough for 3 pc's. Should the router be set as a dhcp server and if so how long should the lease be on for ?

The isp doesn't have to help with networking they just need to monitor the ip that is assigned to the routers WAN interface. Since the router isn't setup as dhcp then you must be using NAT. Leave it as is. If you're having problems with the data throughput and there are no known issues at the ISP then the problem is with the router itself. Try setting the router back to default and config it again.
