Problem: I work for a training school and during class the students have a habbit of entering a password for the admin accounts on Windows 2000 courses and then forgetting the password (thus rendering the PC useless and a reinstall needs to be done).

What I would like to know is if there are any techniques/util's out there that will erase the admin pass or similar. The intergrity of the system is not high priority as it can be fixed once we're in but getting in seems to be the porblem.

An idea I had was to replace the genie/genih/geni .dll (or whatever it's called) so that the login box would record the user/pass to a text file or similar that the instructor could then use to view the user/pass.

Although this method would involve telling a class full of students how to effectivley bug their workmates pc's which is not what we want to do, for obvious reasons!

Any help or ideas on this subject would be appreciated!

Cheers

Tom

implement this tweak http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/13/

the desktop will then auto load and the students can then work with their courses.

there are many solutions to this , including extra admin accounts, thus leaving the original admin untouched and secure to remedy any changes to those used in training, or use of other basic security methods which you might think would be second-nature to the provider of win2000 training, since surely that aspect is covered by the course?
i mean, if you suggest capture to a text file on the local pc then how could the instructor get in to view if such a problem occurred? if you mean capture to a file on the network then presumably you refer to a network login , and as such the instructor could set the accounts for 'unable to cahange password', or reset them anyhow ?
it seems a bit strange to me!!!

Oooo, a secondary admin account no one knows about. I like that. It's so obvious it never occured to me.
