I just got a new computer that was a floor model, and thus had already had XP installed. Also I migrated settings from my old Windows 98 using Alohabob PC Relocator. Don't know if either of these has anything to do with my problem.

I am having a difficult time setting up another user account that functions properly. It seems I cannot set up a limited account, but have to set up and admin account then change it. Also ANY other accounts I set up will not let me customize the desktop wallpaper. I go to properties, can see the wallpapers, but when I click "apply" or "OK" it will not change from the solid color background.

I also found that when I do create a new user and try to log on I get a message that the system is using the default settings. I tried changing the registry settings for the default profile to what I have as the "current user" (yes, I can change the wallpaper successfully in my original primary admin account and also in the guest account).

My goal is to have a functioning LIMITED account where the user can customize as I am able to in the primary admin account. It looks like the registry settings for the default profile now match the ones for my user account that works. Yet when I try to create another account, which is being opened, supposedly, with the default profile, I have the same old problem with not being able to change the wallpaper.

Incidentally, I also am unable to set the wallpaper by right clicking on images of any type and clicking "save as wallpaper".

Any ideas????

iwould guess that it is a problem with permissions. e.g. access/write ability to either registry or part/all of disk - particularly the location of user profile areas. For instance, supposing the new user profile is to be created in folder A , which has restricted permissions allowing only admins to create folder/files and/or write in there. Then it is possible that a limited user profile might be prevented from being created there, whereas an admin one could. Permissions to create/write folders/files is quite seperate from the right to change permissions on folder/files , so once created an admin account could be changed to limited! But, when it came to use it, a limited user would face restrictions again, preventing use, and so the default profile would be used instead. This could also explain the background thing...

just a gues but worth checking maybe!
