Manipulating desktop icons

While browsing other posts here I found out how to locate the registry entry which gives the positions of the icons on the desktop. However, the information there is in binary. How would I go about translating this into something I can use (giving the location of the icons in screen co-ordinates), manipulate the information and convert it back into binary?
