when checking out a program used to change xp's boot screen, the program placed a back-up OS on my computer in case anything went wrong...

now every time I startup, I am prompted which OS I want to run. A minor detail, but annoying.

so my question is how to remove this back-up OS. Either by tool or manually.

The easiest way is to go to control panel. Select system (or performance and maintenance and then system at the bottom if not in classic view)and then the advanced tab. On the startup and recovery section select the settings buton. Click the edit button to edit the boot.ini manually and remove the setting that is no longer required.

Cheers
Andy

Mr_Rain,

What about using System Restore?

I'd use caution if I was you....if it ain't broke then fixing it could produce big headaches for you!!..even destroy a working system.
It is unlikely that you are correct in thinking that a backup OS has been created, especially by something only giving a new boot screen. more likely is a backup of the files giving an entry into the OS....hence the option to go in the new or the old way. a backup which can be used to restore is one thing, but a backup which is complete and working is another...and your menu option is leading you to think that's what it is. but two parrallel installs such as this is impractical, and fraught with danger and not likely to have been done. ( Parrellel installs are possible but there are methods for this and duplication of accounts, machine names etc etc isn't automatically done or even advised to be done manually!).
So, I would say that the two menu options merely allow you to choose which boot proccess e.g boot screen displayed, you want, and then either way will lead into firing up the same OS. ie. it's not a fault, and to try to fix it might give you no boot at all!
however, by editing the boot.ini file you can remove the entry which simply displays the option for the old one. if you are unsure which is which simply edit one slightly then see which is which in practice then go back and remove the one you don't want. make a backup copy first though! you could also edit the timeout as well.
