I frequently get spontaneous reboots when transferring large files from one computer to the other on our network (Win98SE on both computers, networked via Linksys BEFSR41 router). Small files go through just fine. Would appreciate suggestions on how to remedy this.

A couple of things come to mind. Most geeks are quick to point out that spontaneous reboots are a classic sign of overheating, which could happen with a churning hard drive inside a cramped, poorly vented case. You didn't say how large the files are you are transferring, but they would have to be pretty big and the sytem specs fairly modest that might take, say 4 or 5 minutes to transfer a file to overtax a system.

My hunch, however, is because you say these are Win 98 machines that they are spec'd fairly modestly with small hard drives, not much RAM, and perhaps in need of some file maintenance. Consequently your swap file might be running into a space limit and crashing as a result.

Again, this is all very much a hunch. Take a look at the size of your swap file, or virtual memory, and manually set it larger. First, however, check your free space on the hard drive to make sure you can create a larger swap file of at least 128 MB.

Please post back with your details of your system if this did not seem to work or doesn't make sense.

try mapping a drive first.
