I just read a blurb about a utility that provides instantaneous results to on-disk file searches (as you type the keystrokes!) in the current issue of PC Magazine. Well, the last thing I want is a program that builds a huge database or is constantly indexing (of course my indexing service is off), but there is a 21 day trial period so I just downoaded it and installed it on my laptop. WOW!!!
When it first opens it does indeed build a database. It took approximately 5-10 seconds and when I looked in the Windows folder the database is 342 Kb. Kb - as in Kilobytes!!! And the searches are instantaneous. As you type the name of the file you want to find you can see the files that match your keystrokes appear in the interface and narrow down with each ensuing key entry. By default the program will start with XP (of course you can disable that) and an icon is in the taskbar. SHIFT-F1 opens / closes the program.
After using XP's clumsy search function for the past year plus, I can't tell you what a pleasure this program is. The name of the product is Rocket Retriever, it's available at www.pankhurst.com, and if you want to purchase it the price is $14.95. Trust me, this one is worth a try.
Note - The program comes preconfigured to recognize and identify only those file extentions for which your installation of Windows has registered associations. When I searched for wpa.dbl it couldn't find the file, so I went into the program options and told it to ignore the default and look for all extentions. I then set the scan speed to fast and told it to rescan (very fast process). It then immediately found the file for which I was looking. The database is now about 650 Kb.
