I have a problem I can't figure out. Guy has an existing network with various Windows 95/98 machines, all using standard file sharing (no NT domain services); there is a linux box running Samba used as a file server. There is a router to connect the machines to the cable modem, but all of the internal IPs are manually set.
New machine is running Windows XP Pro. It easily grabbed an IP from the DHCP pool, but didn't complain when I changed the IP to a fixed one. No problem browsing the Internet through the network.
File sharing, however, is really screwie. I set the workgroup name of the XP machine to match the existing one, and turned on file sharing. From any other machine on the internal network, the XP machine can be seen, logged into, and worked with. Files can be copied into it, out of it, deleted, etc. after the password login.
From the XP machine, however, the network doesn't exist. I can't get to any machine, either by browsing nor by manually entering addresses. From the XP box, the internal network (let alone the workgroup) doesn't exist.
I've tried adding services and protocols, removing services and protocols, and everything I can think of, and I just cannot get the XP machine to see anything else on the internal network. It's driving me batty.
ANY pointers to web pages, or ANY suggestions would be greatfully accepted and tested...this isn't my shop (it's across town), so I may lag by a day or so in responding with test results.
