Does anyone know how to make the configuration changes to transform a PC that's been allocated to a domain back to an ordinary machine that's (say) just part of a workgroup. Recently, in the process of trying to set up two machines in a single peer-to-peer network, I mistook the wizard for placing the machines into a domain for placing them into a workgroup. Clearly, un-domaining the machine will involve somehow the undoing of that status, plus the removal of the password to enter that domain. Any help on this would be gratefully received, as the only alternative seems to be to format the root drive.

To change from Domain to Workgroup, or vice versa:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Network Identification > Properties.

Yeh, I was well aware of that particular route. However, it doesn't (as far as I'm aware) allow you to un-domain a PC that's already been set up into a domain. The settings there only allow you to positively set a domain or workgroup, not to un-set them.

a few points.
1. a machine does not require a password to log onto a domain....the user does.
2. making a pc a member of a domain does not apply something to the pc itself which makes it a member!. what happens is that a machine account is created - on the server - which defines a pc identified by 'name' as a member. the pc itself is merely given the name of the domain it should look for. ie it is not a pc which must use that domain but a pc which can do if it wants to.
but anyway.. rt-clck my comp, properties, network id, properties, change to member of workgroup, reboot (power off better!).
