getting another program to follow IE (WME)

I am trying to find a way to launch one ore more programs when I launch IE and have them stop when IE is closed. I was orig. thinking this could be possible with a reg. tweak but I am starting to think this is a job for scripting. or am I asking too much? I am a pretty successful tinkerer and am good with working in the registry but have never messed with scripts of any kind (unless you count batch files!).

any help would be appreciated.
