Anyone know anything about this one?

I tried moving AllAdvantage Viewbar (with Mover 98) from its default install location in Program Files on my C:\ drive (I try to keep this free of anything
but system stuff and 'tools') to an internet drive. It wouldn't load so I moved it back again. Had more trouble so removed (uninstalled) program in control
panel, add/remove programs.

It wiped out all the programs from the Control Pamnel Add/remove list! I replaced the registry from a backup copy, got the list back, sorted some things out so the registry was ok (I thought), then found two entries for viewbar in add/remove, so thought I'd remove one through the Tweak UI Add/Remove dialogue.

Deleted one, but both disappeared from the Tweak UI list, and again all the entries have gone from the Add/Remove programs list in Control Panel, and this time I haven't got a backup to replace the list with!! The programs list is still there in Tweak UI - it's only gone from the Control Panel list.

So, Tweak UI shows a list of programmes in the Add/Remove menu, but Control Panel Install/Uninstall tab shows no programmes in the Add/Remove dialogue box (the one which says "the following programmes can be automatically removed by Windows....").

Any ideas where the Control Panel and Tweak UI lists are? (in the registry?) Can I replace the Control Panel list from the Tweak UI one? How?

In Registry:

Selecting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr ent Version\Uninstall shows: [Default] [Value not set]
(I think that's where Control Panel gets the Add/Remove list from).

BUT if I print that selected branch, I get a print out of all the programs listed in Tweak UI, together with their uninstall strings! They're just not being displayed on screen.

UNTIL, that is, I select "Edit", "Add new key", and hey presto! they all appear! Until next time I open the regustry and they're gone again until Edit or Print command used.

I tried highlighting the entries in Tweak UI and copying, deleting and repasting them back in - didn't work; nor does reinstallling programs. Somewhere there must be information which Windows is "forgetting" to display (in Control Panel Add/Remove Uninstall list and in the registry Add/Remove list until "reminded", but not in Tweak UI Add/Remove list) until reminded to do so by being told to print the list or edit it.

Any ideas??

One possibility is that you've deleted or corrupted the appwiz.cpl file that provides the Control Panel icon. Try replacing it using sfc (I assume you're using Windows 98)

Sorry, should have said - I'm using Win95 (OEM 2.1 with a few updates, USB, AGP, Winsock, IE5).

File corruption somewhere (a .dll file??) sounds like a strong possibility. Is the file you suggested, or something similar, in Win95?

Yes it is, so it should be in one of the cab files on your CD. However, as I said, this is just a possibility, and probably a fairly remote one.

Finally got round to checking this out... fairly remote possibility it may have been, but you were right!

Copied appwiz.cpl from the Win95 CD-Rom to C:\windows\system - sorted

Thanks a lot!

Mazin' what needs to be known to keep Windows working...
