Hi!

I'm running Windows XP on an AMD Athlon XP. I just got the system. Everything was fine for a month. Then I install a CD-writer. Seems successfull, it works, and I even burn some CDs.

Then I shut down windows, and BOOM, I get a blue screen that says:
IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL
and some more stuff about problems with new added hardware, that I should disable caching in BIOS, go into safe mode and un-install any the device.

Normaly I would live with the error but every time I shut down, I get the blue screen and it RESTARTS!! So I can't shut down my system safely. I thought, fine, it doesnt like the CD-writer, so I un-install it, and take it out, but the error remains! What to do!!!

1) Go to System Properties - Advanced Tab - Startup & Recovery Settings Button and UNcheck Automatically Restart. That will take care of the reboots.

2) That error message generally points to bad or conflicting drivers. Update all your hardware drivers (from the OEM web sites, not Windows Update). Also, for more info see <a target="_blank" href=http://www.aumha.org/kbestop.htm>THIS LINIK</a>

Please check Event Viewer for additional information that might help determine the device or driver causing the problem. To do this, click Start &gt; Administrative Tools &gt; Event Viewer. Post any recent Application or System Error event IDs here, or check them at eventid.net.
Cheers

First I wanna say, thanks a lot!!! The auto-restart should fix the annoyance. As for the error, I checked Event Viewer (took a while to find it, wasnt in the start menu) and got the following errors application errors:

http://members.rogers.com/urooj17/application.JPG

and the following system errors (there were tonnes)

http://members.rogers.com/urooj17/system.JPG

Many system errors with 'cd-rom'. I'm now gonna search for the newest drivers for the cd-writer. What's OEM?

Well, I checked the errors at evenID.net, and the only one that comes seems to be related to my problem this error:
http://eventid.net/display.asp?app=Top10&eventid=7000

As for my cd-writer, its a Mat****a cd-rw cw-7586 and I searched for drivers, aparently if I have XP, the OS's own drivers are best suited for it.

What's OEM?
Original Manufacturer. ie. if you have a Samsung cd-writer, get the drivers from their site.

BTW: I see you are on Rogers.. I'm from Woodstock, Ont.

Londo,
You need to right click on the application error, select properties, and find out what it says there.
Did you remove the drivers for the cd-r when you removed it?
Do you have a restore point prior to install that you can try?
Lastly, for now, what burning software are you using?
Cheers.

Ah, I'm from Mississauga =)

Many different kinds of errors... don't think most are related to this problem... The cdrom system error says:

The device, \Device\CdRom1, has a bad block.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

When I first got the error, I just removed the cd-drive and checked. When it didn't help, I connected it back, un-installed, and THEN removed. Still no use. Now its back in there, appears to be working fine, but I still get the error.

After checking, it appears I have a restore points practically every day since I bought this machine.

I'm using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 for CD-creation.

OK Londo,
Wait for adg or someone with more experience to help you along here. I think they should have enough info to solve this problem for you. I think the next thing(s) you should do is
1) make sure you have newest patches for Roxio CD creator.
2) next time system crashes make sure you copy down the info and post it here. This will be a STOP code and file name. This should stay on your screen because of the first change ADG asked you to make in his post.
3) test cd-r in another machine if at all possible.
and try to get latest drivers for it. If the OEM is saying XPs' drivers are ok, I would personally try Win 2000 drivers if they have them.

sorry I can't be more helpfulp, good luck.

ps.. You need to right click on the application error, select properties, and find out what it says there. Post info here. It appears to be pointing to IE, which seems strange to me.
Cheers

I'll go get the newest patch for Roxio now.
The cd-r works on my other computer without this error.
OEM only has win 3.x drivers available for download :(
You've been a tonne of help! Thanks!

ps. I'll post the stop error soon.

Hi. I think we're making this more complicated than necessary /images/forums/icons/smile.gif. 9 times out of 10 simply updating all drivers will solve the problem. If that doesn't work, then as suggested above come back and let us know what the blue screen tells you.

Yes Londo, I think you are definitely on the right track. Your problem is driver related. It may be your burning software, your cd-rw, or a combination of both. I too, looked for XP drivers for your cd-rw without much luck. If there are no "patches" for Roxio, maybe you can test burning with Windows media Player and see if errors still occur.
Good luck.

rjmac - absolutely no need for any apology, but thanks for the thought anyway /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

Londo - I've heard of this error message before without solution. A couple of suggestions (which I don't buy, by the way) include cleaning the lens and not using Safedisc (if in fact safedisc was used). My suggestion is letting XP use it's own native driver for the CDRW unless there is clearly a more current one for XP available at the web site.

One thought - just as a test - might be uninstalling Roxio's software completely (save what you need so you can reinstall later if you like) and trying either Nero or some other program - or none at all - just to see if the error message continues. Easy CD Creator has been known to have strange effects on some system.

<font color=green>HAPPY NEW YEAR!</font color=green> to the three of you, Londo, Allan & RJMac.

Just dropping in to say Hi! during "Old Home Week". I'm from Brampton, also a Rogers customer.

Way off topic: Londo, did you have TV troubles yesterday for most of the day? We have digital TV that packed itself in during the night Dec 30/31 and stayed off till sometime during the afternoon yesterday, the 31st. Not that there's anything to watch, mind you.

Thank you, RJMac and Allan.

RJM, rebate? Did you fall on your head? /images/forums/icons/wink.gif Rogers has a monopoly on TVs here as well. I could go to Sympatico for my Internet, but that doesn't take care of my TV. Oh, well. C'est la vie.
