i have triple boot win98-2000prof-2000advserver; how can i change the defualt boot to be win98? i was able to change between the 2 2000 systems, but when i tried 98 i got a forth line on the screen that says "windows 2000(default)," although this selection itself will not boot-i have to scroll up to one of the first 3 originals. also i would like to remove this line altogether, as it remains the default highlighted no matter how i edit the boot.ini; i even created a new boot.ini to no avail.

Post the contents of your boot.ini and we'll be able to assist you better.

right now my problem is the last line on the black screen where i have my boot options: "windows 2000(default)" . this is what's still highlighted, even with the recovery console installed. so i have my 3 systems, the recovery console and that stupid line windows 2000(default) which is always highlighted. so in order to boot to anything i have to move back up. editing, repairing, replacing the boot.ini does not get rid of that line, which first appeared when i tried to make 98 the default with the wrong instructions: c:\io.sys
[boot loader]
timeout=12
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WNNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console" /cmdcons

The simplest and safest method is to boot to W2K and go to Control panel > system and select the advanced tab. Select startup and recovery and you will see the option for selecting the default OS and the timeout value.

here's what finally worked:
In My Computer--Control--Panel--System--Advanced--Startup and Recovery--System Startup.
Choose OS to start with.
thank you and happy new year.
