I have had this problem the last couple of days.
The thing is, that everytime I want to shutdown or restart windows, it hangs very long time(1-2 min) at the saving your settings message.
I have made a similar thread at www.ntcompatible.com and tried there solutions without any luck.
Here is the thread:

have you been to windows update lately?

i had this same problem,in my case it was related to a security update, luckily it is removable from the add/remove programs panel...the entry your looking for is "win2k hotfix[pre-sp4] for more info read Q329170" or something similar, the q329170 number being the key,i fixed this problem on my own machine and the same prob on a friends just by removing this update from the add/remove panel....with the numbr you can look it up and see what it does at the MS site and decide if you really need it or not,but i believe it was to do with mostly networked pc's, so it may not even apply to you

Actually it happened rigth after a windows update.
I havent thought about that, cause i didnt think a windows update could do that.
Ill see if that will fix it.
I can see that I have the file u mention installed but I cant find any information about it on microsofts website.

Thank you so much.
I removed the damn thing and now my Win2k shut down in a matter of seconds.
Nice that Microsoft sends out updates which decreases performance.

glad to help..
it was easier for me to track down, since i was reformatting a friends machine and noticed it right after completing the update process, then when the same thing happened to my already fairly up to date machine... i only had four updates to blame it on...process of elimination got it pretty quick

I run 2000 on my pc - myself as a user & admin - and my wife as a user. Her pc upstairs is Win98SE - and only she uses this to access my dial up modem via ICS, and I in turn access her printer.
'Save settings' closes in seconds when I log off as admin or from my own account - but hers takes at least a minute.
Could this be related to the update scenario discussed, or maybe the network settings?

I also have this problem and I have the "Q329170" entry in the Add/Remove programs dialog. However, when I try to remove this, windows say that some of my programs may not work correctly if I remove that...

I have set tweakui to auto logon my wife - that way she can switch my pc on, and by the time she gets upstairs, she can boot her own pc and dial up straight away.
When I log her off downstairs, [and she is still on the network], the "save settings" is instant - it only has a long delay if her machine is off!!
So it isn't related to the 'update patch'

Mclaughlin21,

Oh, so you use ICS, then, between a Win2k machine and a Win98 machine?

Would you be prepared to advise me on how to set up that, as I've been trying to do it but with no luck. I'm using two Win2K machines, peer-to-peer setup. I've tried both auto and fixed IP addresses but the client machine can never find the server and so rapidly times out and the dial-up therefore fails. Clearly, something on my setup isn't configured properly, even though I've gone into it in considerable detail. (Yes, my firewalls have been disabled when trying it out).

I'll start a new thread in the Networking forum. Please respond there, if you think you can help.
