I'm a little confused, you mention you got a Linux machine, but then wanna network the two XP machines. Since I dont know squat about Linux, I'm gonna pretend its not there /images/forums/icons/smile.gif
Basic layout should be like this: the Cable Modem plugs into the WAN (or similar) port in the Switch, and both Computers plug into one of the LAN ports. On the computers, you need to set them to obtain an IP Address automatically. To do this, go into Start > Control Panel > Netowrk and Internet Connections > Network Connection. You should have an icon for Local Area Connection. Right click and go to properties. Highlight TCP\IP and go to properties. Just make sure its set to obtain both IP and DNS automatically. Now, get back to the Control Panel, go to Performance and Maintenance > System. Move to the Computer Name tab. Give each computer a different name, but set them to be on the same Workgroup. Reboot after making these changes, and you should be good to go with two networked computers sharing a cable internet connection.
However, some ISP's (mine for instance) require a unique IP Address for each computer that goes online. If the internet connection doesn't seem to work for both computers, you may need to contact yours to find out their policy on this.

The Micro server does run on Linux 2.0, all commands will be from the XP Pro box via I.E.6, (thru cat 5 cable) ! This server has never been used, but is 2 yrs old and the set up CD only recognises Win 95/98 or NT4. Therefore I have to set it up manually. The manual has commands for NT4 but the GUI is different in XP.
(The server has no keyboard/monitor connected to it! Other then a small LCD on the back with simple Y/N buttons, all commands come via the XP connection). It powers up fine...goes thru all of its self tests. The external 4 port switch shows good connections for the cable modem, the 2 XP systems and the server .
I get lost trying to follow the manual giveing NT4 commands into the XP Pro GUI.

you could of course organise a dual boot on one of the xp machines.
or better still would be to buy an old 486 and install nt.

It is not clear to me what you want to use the gateway/linux box for - a web server, or just a file server for stuff for your xp machines? Or are you hoping to use it as your internet gateway and router, which is "tre' kewl" for this little number. Not meaning to pass the buck, and not knowing where you live, I would see if there is a lug (linux user's group) near you. They love these sorts of projects. Personally I would take a look at iXplorer at http://www.i-tree.org/secixpro/index.htm which is an ssh client for windows to interface a linux box. This is really getting into uber geekdom which is why I suggest finding a local lug.
