Recently we bought a Toshiba laptop with WinXP. We ran an ethernet cord to our cable modem router (a LinkSys model with 4 available ports). The laptop connected and the connection worked. We could use the internet.
My Macintosh, another computer connected to the router, also works well. The Internet is fine.
However, the third and final PC, our HP Desktop with WinME, lost its internet abilities when we connected the Toshiba to the router. Obviously, I checked the cords (making sure they were tight and secure) and checked to see if there is activity into the WinME computer (there is--the computer recognises a connection to the router). The latter part is the problem. If the computer knows it is connected to the router (the lights on the router and WinME computer cleary show a good connection), then why can't I use the internet?
When I load IE 6, it struggles and says it is "detecting proxy settings". Then it stops, giving the "page cannot be shown" message. Every piece of hardware is functional. What could be wrong?
Thanks!
