Hi!
at the office LAN: when I try to open the web page www.kvam.kommune.no the message "The page cannot be displayed" pop up. ( however I can open this page from home).
Pinging www.kvam.kommune.no [80.232.111.2] with 32 bytes of data:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
I`ve also tried pathping and tracert. but that don`t tell me much..
any thoughts? could it be a firewall problem perhaps?

Very well could be a firewall issue, or a blocked site. Is this a site that your LAN Admins would consider "unappropriate" for any reason? Adult oriented or non-business related?

the site is business related, and I am a LAN Admin.
some users in the LAN needs to use this site and have asked me for help.
why tracert stops at step 10 is a mystery to me.

can you ping or tracert anything outside tha lan at all ?
they might be turned off at the firewall/proxy .
yes I can ping and tracert outside the LAN.
is it a logical explanation why I get the ip addr. on the site when i ping it although I get 4 reguest timed out in reply?

Ping first must find out the IP address from the URL, by asking a DNS server, before it can send messages to the site.
When you get the IP address, that means that DNS has been resolved.
Then ping tries to actually send messages to it.
And in your case, fails.

the reason you get the name returned when using the ip is that somewhere (your cache or another , a dns server etc etc ) has a cached record of that detail. it does not come back from the destination itself. i.e. that is no indication that your query has ever got out of the lan.
I've checked the ip and the name and both are valid.
the way routing works is that by using the subnet mask to determine if the destination lies within the physical subnet or not your query is either sent local or to the gateway. if the route is known then things go smooth , if not best guesses send it from router to router until the ttl causes death - --time out, or a restriction halts it.
so, either..
1. a problem with the lan ip setup (e.g. dodgy mask or gateway somewhere), or
2. firewall restriction.
I wouldn't follow the red herring of dns and names though. the ip is correct so stick to that to resolve if I were you!
since the last two ip are v.similar you give in the trace suggests that its either being passed to the proxy/firewall and stopping or its at the best guess stage. try pinging them to see if it is the proxy/firewall.

I can't add to the discussion of just why your office connection can't or won't load the Norweigan site, I can suggest a workaround that has worked for me on occasion in similar circumstances - that is, for whatever reason (firewall, blocked IP ranges) I can't surf to a site directly thru the office lan, I do a google search that is sure to bring up the site I want and, essentially, use google as a proxy.
thanks great info. The problem has solved itself.

I think you have DNS problem.
Go to Local Network Area\Property\TCP-IP Property
Use the following DNS Server Address:
Alternate DNS Server:
Try: 198.6.1.3
198.6.1.4
Or: 198.6.1.10
Good Luck.
