Hi,
I have problems with a win zip archive. I can't open it. The errormessage is something like: This is not a winzip archive or part of a data spreaded archive. Sorry, I run a german version of WIN98 so I don't have the errormessage in plain english. Is there a way to get my data back?

Two things come to mind, either the file is corrupted or if it is on 2 or more floppies, the last floppy has to be started first.

Thanks BertImmenschuh,
It's just one file on a CD-RW. It seems to be corrupted. Is there a way to repair it?

Usually not. Have you tried copying it to a hard drive, remove the read-only attribute and tried again?

Yes, I've copied it to the harddrive, but what's the read only attribute?
I just tried to open it without success. I also tried the program "zip repair". But the new "repaired" file was empty (zero kb). Any suggestions?

The 'read-only' attribute bit can be seen by right-clicking the file name and choosing Properties from the menu. The attributes are shown toward the bottom of the window that comes up.

Usually if Zip Repair can't fix the file, it is too corrupted to work with.

Thanks for your help BertImmenschuh. BTW, where are you located? Your name sounds german. Or do you have german ancestors?

German only since 1650, no record of the name before that. I'm in Northern Wyoming, on the East foot of the Bighorn Mountains. We've been in the US since 1848 and all of the name are related [except for one stolen identity].

About 120 miles to the West of Devil's Tower, right where I90 and I25 join.

Interesting, almost all of you must have been emigrated :). Only 14 Immenschuhs registered in the phonebook of whole Germany. And we are at least 80 Mio. people.
cheers, Gernot

We found only 3 listed when we visited one of them in '90.
