My friend is not getting any sound from music cds only. All sounds from game cds play fine. The problem started after he attempted to play an enhanced music cd that required a Quicktime update. He does not have an internet connection so did not upgrade. The next time he booted his pc and tried to play a music cd there was no sound. The cd-rom drive is functioning and the seconds tick by on Windows cd player. Device manager shows no problems. Volume controlls have been checked. He tested many music and game cds. None of the music cds have sound. All of the game cds do.
Thanks for any suggestions.

If the settings in Control Panel, Multimedia are correct, then plug a headset into the jack on the front of the CD drive and try playing an audio CD, should get sound from it.

Double-click the speaker icon in the sys tray.
Choose Options/Advanced Controls
Click the Advanced button.
Uncheck "Digital Output Only"
See if that helps.
