i have win xp pro network with 4 computers. 2 can see the whole network and see each others files, but can't acctually access the other 2s files. one i can access the network and see the other computers, but cannot access any computers files. and the last one can see the network, but doesn't see any of the other computers on the network. just seems all a little strange that all these different levels of problems on a single network. if i set the permissions on one computer so everyone can do anything, all the computer that see that computer should be able to do this. instead only some can do what they should. while the other unexpainably can't. any idea would be greatly appritiated.

Hello,
Maybe this will help... I've had the same problem previously and found out that you have to set permissions on two level, one is in the sharing tab, and one in the security tab. You can access the security tab by right clicking the shared folder and clicking on properties. You have to disable "Use Simple File Sharing" in Folder options to be able to see the security tab.. BTW, if you have windows home, security tab can only be accessed in safe mode.. hope you solve your problem, do share it with us if you solved it in another way..

...and make sure that the XP Firewall is off on all computers.

the problem was the program pc cillin...i use it mainly for virus protection and didn't notice the firewall protection. i only use it on the two computers. i found out that was the problem when i could ping out but not in. i spent many hours playing with the permissions. there are only so many problems that can happen with windows file shareing and networking.
1) win xp firewall
2) third party firewall
3) permissions
4) physical connection with hardware (cannot ping)
there are more that i am not thinking of, but i think this is a good starting list.

User names are a subcategory of permissions problems:
If you have a user name (george) on one computer, but not on the other, you can't see things on the other one - and if you have different passwords on the two computers then you still can't see/print on each other.
