This is a two-part problem. I have been having a connection problem for about 2 weeks now. I could connect to the internet, but my connection would always be' 622 bytes received 521 bytes sent @ 115200' I couldn't find servers when I would open my browser.

I finally uninstalled dun, tcp/ip, and deleted winsock/winsock2 from the registry. Then reinstalled it all again. Now when I try to connect I get the dial-up user/password window and attempt to connect, then when it's verifying my user and passwoed information, another window pops up called user logon/login(?) and asks me for my user name and passeord again but it won't accept my password. This second window never came up before now. Can someone tell me if I can bypass this or anything that can help?

Go into My Computer > Dial Up Networking. Right click your DUN connection and go to Properties. Move over to the Server Types tab, uncheck everything but TCP\IP at the bottom. There's one specifically labeled "Log on to Network", that may be the one doing it to you.

log on to network wasn't checked the only things checked were 'enable software compression' and tcp/ip. In Network i'm set up with:
Client for Microsoft Network
Microsoft Family Logon
Dial-up Adapter
TCP/IP

And it is set for 'client for microsoft network' could these settings have something to do with it?

Thanks for your response.

What you need would depend on your setup.

The Microsoft Family Logon is only needed if you have several users on the same computer and you want all of them to have their own custom profiles. If no one logs in at startup then you don't need the Microsoft Family Logon. Just highlight it in the list and hit "Remove".

The Client for Microsoft Network is only needed if you have a network of more than one computer or are on a broadband connection (which is basicly the same thing). If you have neither of these, a just a stand-alone machine with a dial-up connection, then you should delete the Client by highlighting and hitting "Remove".

If you removed both of these things then the Primary Network Logon box should show "Windows Logon".

just some points.

when installing w98 you get asked to enter a user name. first time of use you get asked for a password. if you choose not to enter a password it doesn't ask again or show that login box unless other factors (new users etc) occur. However, just because you no longer see it, it hasn't gone. this is what windows will regard as the user logging in to windows.
If windows login is selected as the primary login then this is the user that it uses.
A RAS dial-up uses the credentials specified in the dial-up settings but this only gets you through the gate . it gives no right to access the network. when dialing in to a corporate network you then need to be validated by a domain username and password. for internet use this is not needed.
the choice of attempting such a network login is by virtue of the tick box 'log in to network', and if ticked once the dial up is achieved an further login it tried and it uses......guess what?
..the windows primary login........even if you had no idea it was there!

remove the tick!
