alright guys here is my problem ...

I have loads of VCDs in my collection that I run on my system, but it has occured couple of times now that after a while a certain VCD which runs just fine is suddenly detected as Audio CD ... and when I insert a VCD .. my audio software (Winamp in this case) pops up and runs it as an Audio CD ...

The duration of a VCD is 70 mins and when the system picks it up as a Audio CD ... it appears as "track 1" and with same length .. i.e 70 mins ... I hear no sound and nothing at all, though the track time still runs ...

why it happens? and how can I fix this problem? plz help me sort out. I am using a Samsung 52X drive.

Thank you in advance.

I haven't had that problem with VCD's, but I have had the same thing happen with data cd's. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred it is a bad/unreadable disc, usually from a physical problem with the disk that wasn't noticeable till I looked real close (tiny crack, tiny nick in the foil that I couldn't see till I held it up to a light, etc.)

Reading over your post I'm not sure if I understood correctly. One way I read it sounds like you said that it is only the one disc that has the problem, and the other way I read it sounds like you said that once this one disc causes the issue then all discs you put in after it have the same issue. If it is just the one disc with the problem, then my money would be on physical defect. If it was all discs after that first one with the same issue then let us know and we'll come up with something else.

Josh,

I got the same double meaning as you when I read it. Here's where I found the confusion:
". . .detected as Audio CD ... and when I insert a VCD. . ."
If it had read that VCD, then the meaning is clear - it's only the one VCD. By phrasing it the way it is, it could mean all VCDs inserted after the damaged one.

alright time to clear the confusion ...

alright ... this problem comes with only couple of VCDs ... NOT everyone !!! suppose if I run 10 VCDs ... 2 of them are detected as an audio Cd and rest would run fine !!! I have more than 500 VCDs and 4 of them are detected as an Audio CDs ... so I got problem with 4 ...

BUT the defected VCDs would run just fine if I play them on a normal VCD player !!! :) ... so this problem only arises when I run it on my system !!! (PC) ... hope this clears the confusion ...

alright now tell me where the problem is .... thanx

I guess nobody has experienced this problem, sorry.
Don't give up though. Someone who knows the answer may see your question and post a fix.

yeah I guess no one has observed this before ... this is driving me crazy ... my VCD Player runs it as a normal VCD just fine, and my system picks it up as a Audio CD, I try changing CD roms still does not work, and I need to rip some parts of the VCD and I cannot seem to get it ... I really dunno what to do it's so frustrating .

cd-roms/players from different brands/models have different error corrections levels, my guess is that those vcd's are a little damaged and your vcd player can correct them and the cd rom cant

That is my thinking, crono. I have audio CD's that won't play in my car stereo but have no problem in my home stereo. Taking a Disc Doctor to them fixed them so they played in both. It is a difference in error correction, laser head lens quality, tracking precision, all manner of things that will let one player deal with a little damage and totally throw off another.

My money is on damaged VCDs. The fact that they play fine in a VCD player tells me the data is intact, but there are probably surface defects on the bottom that throw off the beam. Try cleaning them up with a resurfacer and see if you still have the problem.
