ME, athlon 2000+, 128DDR, 80gb hd, norton anti-virus and internet security, 1.5mps cable connection. if i am connected for more than just a few minutes, the little hour glass shows up and my cpu goes to 100% usage, ram goes to 100% usage, and i have to unplug my cable modem for a few seconds, until the ram dumps, to continue. i have run the same specs/ hardware for about a year, and it's never happened before. it has been doing this now for two weeks or better. can't find any viruses. tried to restore, won't do it. when it restarts, it tells me that no changes were made. tried to run scandisk, but it goes for hours, and won't finish. tried to defrag, but it tells me to run scandisk, and that is just a vicious circle. please, anyone, help, before i totally crash this hd.

cool problem! well if itz a viruz don't expect to scan your pc if your already infected and find out some viruzes (well most of the time they do). And use norton disc doctor instead of scandisk to fix your hdd (also sometimes ndd does not work but atleast it does'nt go on an endless loop of trying again). And also WME sucks! try 98 instead, its more stable.

Also try to mention next the other programs your running in the background or in your system tray. Also try the magical button <ctrl>+<alt>+<del> to open the task manager and observe the "not" should be present programs running on your system.

(sorry if can't help you... me just human... heheh!)
