ok this is the problem, when i try to do a full scandisc, even in safemode, it will scan for about 30 minutes then it will stop saying that windows scandisc has stopped and restarted 10 times, saying that its because some program is trying to write to my disc, and will not be able to finish a full scan, but in safemode nothing is running except explorer. i even have my modem disconnected so theres nothing that can distract my os from running the scandisc. once in awhile (very rarely) scandisc will actually finish its full scan but there are no errors found. also, i have a legit norton internet security pro that i use to scan for viruses all the time (full scans) and it always says no viruses found. whats going on here??? is my computer damaged in a way that will not allow it to self repair or recognize that there is a problem? thankyou in advance.

i had that problem on a win98 pc some time ago.
i just ctrl - alt - del to close everything except sistray and explorer, also turned off screensaver and the apm.

you may try that...

like i already stated, everything is off in 'safemode' except explorer, my antivirus program etc. everything is off. so their is some invisible program, (possibly something like a virus?) that is running secrectly. i have no idea what it could be. is there a way to find out if their is something secrectly running besides ctrl+alt+delete? like mabey a dos mode check in safemode?

i dont think it is a virus, to make sure you should update your virus definitions and run a full scan again.

about the other thing, i dont know. but someone will anser, just hang on

in win2k theres msinfo32 to know all the running proceses and loaded modules, but im not sure if its on winme too, you may try

good luck

Go to www.lavasoftusa.com and get Ad-aware and remove all Spyware from your computer.
I bet it is spyware that keeps writing to your drive.

Subtronic,

MSinfo32 is available in WinMe as well. Go to Start, Run, type MSInfo32. When it opens, go to Software Environment, Running Tasks and it will tell you all you want to know.

If you don't recognize something, go to Edit, Select All, Copy and paste the information into your answer here. Someone will be able to help you identify anything you don't know.

you say that in safe mode only explorer is running but that message usually is the result of the drive contents changing so its likely something else is running. are you sure its not the norton stuff?
how about creating a boot floppy and running scandisk from that mode?

Subtronik,

Nothing out of the ordinary there, as far as I can tell. I have all those running as well as several others, and I'm not having the problems that you are.

Sorry,

well i finnally had a successful full scandisc in safemode last night. what i did was in scandisc options i checked the box for 'do not preform write testing' and ran it fine. now i do not know if write testing is essetial or if that was even the fix (ill do another test tonight) but reguardless it worked, so i am hopeful. if it will not scandisc in safemode with that same option checked again tonight then ill just have to reformat and reinstall winme because i feel it might be a problem with winme's scandisc program. i want to say thank you to all who replied in an effort to help solve my problem and if anyone else has anything to add i am still very intrigued will this issue because of the potential of a virus being the culprit.

Subtronic,

Good to hear you finally were able to get your disk scanned.
As for Write Testing, it is definitely a test worth doing. If you can't run ScanDisk with it running, I think it's better to turn it off than not scan your disk at all.

I found the quote below at this site:
Write Testing</font color=orange> (http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:Zu7d5A4CcdcC:www.igknighttec.com/Windows/Windows9x/scandisk.php+%22write+testing%22%2BScanDisk&hl=en&ie=UTF-8><font)

<font color=blue>"If you get an error while running Scandisk saying that it has restarted 10 times, tell it to show this error again, stop the Scandisk by hitting CANCEL, and go back to here. Click on the DO NOT PERFORM WRITE-TESTING. That should take care of the problem."</font color=blue>

Good luck and let us know how it goes, please.

Very interesting this stupid scandisc &gt;=(
i did another scandisc using the same trick, and it seems to be the way to temporarily fix the problem. i will just use this method untill i upgrade to xp. thanks again.
