Just a quick question, do I disconnect the cable connection or the NIC connection prior to defragging my hard drives, using win98se, on P4, 512sdram, 60 gb C, and 20Gb D.
Thanks for replies.

No reason to do that as far as I know. When I defrag, everything stays plugged in, just the same as if I were actively using it.

I don't actually unplug anything on my "always-on" connection either. I do, however, engage the Internet Lock in my ZoneAlarm and shut off Norton AV...makes the defrag go faster.

That makes good sense on the firewall, and Norton. I am asking because at work I disconnect my T1 line prior to defrags because it slows down the defrag time to accomplish. I figured seeing cable is pretty close It would take longer. I am generally able to defrag both the 60gb and 20gb in about 8 minutes. I have seen at work with the line left in place on a small 13gb unit it took almost One hour.
JohnT,
Have you considered defragging in Safe Mode when you're at work? It should speed things up considerably.

Not that I don't believe you, but I can't see why having input to the NIC would be a resource drain - cable or T-1. As long as the signal isn't passing through to an app that's using it....but if I'm mistaken it would just be another error in a long, long line........

Hi Allan!
Are you referring to my suggestion to defrag in Safe Mode? If so, you wouldn't believe how much faster my machine defrags and scansdisk in Safe Mode. I wasn't referring to being attached to Cable, just a quick way to cut out apps running in the background - Screensavers, AV etc.
No need to lengthen your line! /images/forums/icons/wink.gif

Oh no Nana - defragging in safe mode is always a good idea. No, I was talking about John's question about disconnecting the cable and his comment about the defrag being faster after pulling the T-1 line.

Allan,
OK, that makes sense. Good thing you didn't lengthen the line!

That's OK, Allan. Mine's so long now, I couldn't drive the length of it in 2 weeks!

Gee thanks everyone for the great input. As far as the T1 line goes at work it is of course indirectly connected via server and approximately 35 other work stations so yes it is quicker to defrag by pulling the line. The Cable modem at home is active unless you unplug it thus the internet aspect is always active even when not on net but PC is powered on. I know this by the firewall blocks and messages I receive to tell me what port was protected. The latest info I received was to turn on the Internet firewall lock to block activity, turn off virus protection, and the usual suspects and go ahead and defrag. If it is too slow, sign off cpu, power down modem, restart and complete defrag and then reboot and power up modem. Having had a dialup for the past 5 years has helped to learn a lot on modems for DSN, now it is a new learning curve for the broadband, thank you very much for a lot of good info.
My apology - you are absolutely correct that the signal is reaching your firewall and the firewall will use some level of resources (I use a hardware firewall, so I never really think about the software ones). But I honestlly don't think you'll see any difference if you leave the cable plugged in. I have 8 systems all with cable connections and have never had an issue.

JohnT,
I have WinMe and use cable modem - always on - at home. That's why I defrag in Safe Mode. I have only 3G on a 60G drive, so it doens't usually take any more than 4-5 minutes.

Thanks I will give it a try with modem on and possibly in safe mode which I know will cut down on a lot of possible interference. I have 60 gb on c drive and 20gb on d, with about 15gb used from c and 5gb used from d, and with a defrag about every two to three weeks I was pretty happy doing both as mentioned in 8-10 minutes. A new question what is a good hardware firewall? I have read where they are much better than the software type, any recommended sites I can check on reviews?
Thanks again.
John:
Pretty much any hardware firewall is superior to software. Mine is built in to my Linksys routers.
