I'm creating custom system folder on my windows and I wanto to know how I put my custom folder in the tree list of windows explorer? And what is the right configuration to apply DDE in custom system folders?

Basically, all you have to do is go to File > New > Folder and click. This will get you the new folder. From there give it a name and drag and drop (rt click) it to where ever you need it ... ie, C:\new folder; C:\windows\new folder; C:\windows\system\new folder; etc.

Hey, Allan ...

You can physically create a folder and place it in C:\windows\system or system32, I just tried it. But, you may well be correct in that it might not actually work. fpm1 didn't tell us what he has in mind.

Tom,

Hi! Call me stupid - don't you dare - but doesn't a newly created folder get automaticlly entered in the Windows tree as a sub-folder of whatever folder it was created from?

For example, if I was in My Documents and went to File, New, Folder, the folder I create would automatically be a sub-folder of My Documents. Why do I have to drag & drop anything?

/images/forums/icons/smile.gif Tom, yes of course you can do that. What I meant is that XP recognizes some folders as "System" folders and will not allow them to be deleted. These are designated as System folders by the OS and I don't believe the user can create a folder and have it designated a "System Folder".

I dont want to create folder like that I have on my C:.
I want to create somthing like "another my documents folder", with the same behavior.

I have just created the folder, I put it on the desktop and in windows explorer tree list, it appears above 'my documents' icon. But when i click it, instead of it behaves like 'my documents'( that is to show the content of a pointed C: folder in the listview pane), it opens another explorer window with the selected folder in it. The problem isn't 'how can I create this system folder' but 'How can I do it behaves like 'my documents'?

If you know please send me the answer.

Nana,

You are absolutely correct. When I first read fpm1's question I kinda got the impression that a file was being developed, perhaps on the desktop, and that he or she wanted to know how to get it into the file tree.

Hey, fpm1 jump on in anytime and enlighten us as to precisely what you want to accomplish with this file you are creating. /images/forums/icons/laugh.gif

ps: Nana, I would never call you stupid. I was taught to respect my elders. /images/forums/icons/wink.gif

OK, Tom. You asked for it! I've cancelled all those fancy 5 star hotels I booked for the two of you on your cross country trip. <a target="_blank" href=http://www.ndscs.nodak.edu/instruct/arch_drafting/cbcity-pics.html>This</a> is where you're staying now. Please apologize to the yak. I'm afraid he'll have to bunk with you.

fpm1,

Will this work?

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/73/>Add Custom Folder to My Computer or the Desktop (All Windows)</a>

Here's what it says:
<font color=blue>"Create your own custom system folder, like "My Documents", that can not be deleted or renamed and place it on the desktop and My Computer."</font color=blue>

Allan,

Thank you. You're making an old lady /images/forums/icons/blush.gif

I knew about this tweak, but I didn't understand that this is what fpm1 was looking for until his/her most recent post.

Yes, I have just tried it , and works. If do it, you will see a folder on the desktop or my computer that seems like my documents. but when you click it, instead of you have an explorer with your folder showing a content, like behaves my documents, it just open an explorer with the pointed folder selected. And when you click it in explorer tree, instead of show the content on the right pane(that lists the folder's content), it opens another explorer with the pointed folder's content.
I have searched over the net and I knew about information that anything in the registry configuration has not worked properly. Then I'm asking if anybody knows what I need to change in registry to correct this, please send me.

fpm1,

I'm glad it worked for you. I'm sorry, I don't know what to suggest for your registry problem. Have you done all the steps suggested, including:

1) the ones at the very beginning before the numbered instructions start?

2) Either #7 or #8?

3) Is there any contents in the folder to show when you open an explorer window?

Good luck. At least you've completed step one successfully.
