I am told by a tech that I need a system restore disc for a Compaq 4704 P1-133, to reinstall my
Windows 98. I have formatted the hard drive, and
the drive is an update/non Compaq. I was told by Compaq customer care that Microsoft no longer supports WIN 98, so therefore They (Compaq), no longer distributes the discs, or offers support.
I do not have the SS disc, but have the WIN 95 and 98 CD's. Advice?

I think MS is actually dropping support for Win95 next month and Win98 in June or July 2003. You should be able to install Win98 as a 'clean' install on the empty drive. You won't have all the features of the Compaq hardware, such as a multimedia keyboard, and may have to locate drivers for for the sound card, modem, video card, etc. Anyway, I've done it on Packard Bell with good results.

Thank you Bert for your info.
I discovered that my Windows setup proceeds to the point a file is missing, which is described as:
Setupx.dll. Can you advise me where I might find
this type of file, and how to retrieve it, and apply it to the hard drive to continue loading Windows?
Thanks in advance.
Rick.

Rick, have you checked Google.com? I just typed in setupx.dll and found alot of information on that file. I'll link it for you. Good luck,

Bob

The file is in the compressed pre_copy2.cab file on the CD. It needs to be extracted by the setup routine and not usable as a separate extraction. I'd sure read about it at the Google link given.
