If I didn't know what changes the software I'm installing was making to my registry I'd be a nervous wreck. I have done complete uninstalls of demos (I just needed another 30 days is all! I hadn't made my mind up yet...), found out exactly which major software manufacturer added that spyware to my machine and when (it was Intuit the *******s), and kept a before and after backup of my registry whenever I had doubts about what an installation or operation would do to my machine (i.e. whenever I do ANYTHING). I've been using Advanced Registry Tracer (Elcomsoft) with excellent results. Demo available on CNET. One warning, before you do anything go to options and set "start with blank database" otherwise you will ovewrite your last save as soon as you do another scan. That's the only flaw I have encountered.
