Hi there I had a major problem, after restarting my computer it would go to the "Starting Windows" part & then the error message below was shown

While Initializing Device IOS
Error: An I/O Subsystem Diver Failed to Load
Either a File in the .\ Iosubsys Subdirectory
is corrupt or the System is Low on Memory

I tried lots of things including "Safe Mode" but that would stop at exactly the same place <font color=blue>arrgghh</font color=blue> I also tried scanreg /restore & that was restored ok, but my computer would stop at the same darn place again. . . .nothing worked that I tried /images/forums/icons/crazy.gif

My only alternative (I thought) was run my windows cd through to get it back to a level playing field. . . It worked all is fixed now, but the bad thing I have to checkout what updates I need to re-install plus all my tweaks from months of tuning & tweaking etc

Anyway my problem is fixed now, but to help me for future stuff ups, could someone please tell me what the error means exactly, I hope it never happens again, I still don't know WHY because I didn't change anything

Did I solve it the right way ??

All help & advice highly appreciated. . .I thank you in advance /images/forums/icons/smile.gif

Windows98-SE
IE-6.0 SP-1

Hally,

Here are a couple of links to start you off. Several of them say they're regarding Win95, but maybe they could cause the same problem in Win98.

Here is a <a target="_blank" href=http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:FybdOpiiHYcC:www.upgradingandrepair ingpcs.com/faqs/General_Windows/gw_A_1_c.asp+While+Initializing+Device+IOS&hl=en&ie=UTF-8>quote</a> that looks interesting:

<font color=blue>Reader: "I have an HP Brio running Win95 (4.00.950B with 32Mb RAM). I'm getting the following message: While initializing device IOS: Error: I/O subsystem driver failed to load. Either a file in the .\iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt or the system is low on memory. I have swapped out all of the files in the folder and still get the message."

Scott: "This error is normally caused by running the MS-DOS disk caching program Smartdrv.exe, which is incompatible with Win95 (Windows 95 has built-in disk caching)."</font color=blue>

From Computer Hope: <a target="_blank" href=http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:1Vm39P6HJRcC:www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000359.htm+While+Initializing+Device+IOS&hl=en&ie=UTF-8>IOS Errors</a>

Finally, here's what <a target="_blank" href=http://www.google.com/search?q=While+Initializing+Device+IOS>Google</a> suggests. Most of them refer to Windows Protection Faults, but you will find some regarding the message that you received. I'm sure that other members will be able to give you much better information than I was able to supply.

Hope it helps,

PS: Don't forget to give baby Steven his Canadian Nana's kiss, please. And, no, there isn't any news yet. Still 3 days until the official date, though.

No problem, Hally. It's always nice to help a friend, even when the friend lives more than half a world away!

Well I did a bit of studying with your links Nana, google showed up a cracker, its funny but Microsoft had a error page especialy for my problem

<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311108>Click Here</a>

I saved & printed this page just in case. . . I'm so proud of myself because the thing they tell you to do is what I did to fix my computer!!!! (I'm not showing off) hee hee

Its such a downer when your computer fails for no apparent reason, & when you fix it you feel so good /images/forums/icons/smile.gif with yourself. . . but can you tell me something please, I went to see what updates I have to re-install & I'm shocked because there's only a couple I had to do again. . . is this right

I thought I'd have to re-do IE6.0 SP-1 & all of the 98SE updates

Thanks so much Nana

Hally,

That's EXCELLENT!

You made the right decision, you have every right to be very proud of yourself.

As for your updates, you didn't uninstall anything, did you? If not, they should still be there after, shouldn't they?

I'm so pleased you got it fixed the right way on the first try, no less!
