Hello,
I have 128 MB RAM on my computer, but when I went to "system resources" I could see that only 330 KB of the RAM was free. I tried to close some programs, but it still didn't increase. What do I do?
Thanks a lot

an efficient use of ram is to use as much as possible. the real check is swappable memory. if this is big then this can be considered 'free if required'. the more you get into ram the faster you can get to what you or the os needs and the faster things go.

I wouldn't worry about it if your computer is not running like a slug. The operating System often uses all of the RAM as it is a lot faster to access than the hard disk. Therefore things like background windows and loaded programs can be stored there and accessed quickly.
If when switching applications all the content of the window appears slowly one item at a time then it means that your computer is struggling for memory and is having to use hard disk space to store additional memory (virtual memory i think its called).
Manojo,
Have a look at this:
<a target="_blank" href=http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/win-resources.html>Windows 9.x System Resources </a>
Here is their introduction sentence:
<font color=blue>"Hey, I have 128MB of RAM, but I keep getting a warning that more than 90% of my system resources are in use. What gives?"</font color=blue>

Hi adamselves, thank you for your answer.
I too wouldn't worry, but the problem is when I start some programs, the computer tells me : "Your system is dangerously low in resources.Would you like to shut down some programs?"
This happens even if I have only one window is open

Nana, thank you for the link. I am now able to check my resources, but it still doesn't help me increase the resources. Perhaps you would be able to help me better if I gave you a list of the open programs?
Do let me know
Manojo,
Sorry, I'm don't know how to help you with this any further.
One of the best members of WinGuides for help with System Resources and Memory is Bert. I think he might suggest that you do more reading on the subject, so I've lined up three other links that he frequently uses. They are all excellent references. The big thing you need to understand is the difference between System Resources and Memory.
<a target="_blank" href=http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm>Memory Management</a>
<a target="_blank" href=http://www.aumha.org/a/resource.htm>System Resources - FAQ</a>
<a target="_blank" href=http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Window_memory.htm>Memory Use By Windows</a>
Sorry that I can't do any more for you, but keep checking back as the others are far more experienced than I and may be able to help you further.

There is a difference between the terms Memory [RAM] and System Resources and it is best explained as System Resources is HOW Windows manages Memory. Memory usually consists of System RAM and the swapfile. The swapfile is a large file on the hard drive that Windows uses to hold data that won't fit into Memory or data that may be needed but at a lower priority.
System Resources can only be increased by not running programs and a list of what you have running would be very helpful. An easy way to get it is to go to Start, Run, type in msconfig and click OK or press Enter. Look at the items in the Startup tab.

Manojo,
Here is an easy way to find out what is running in WinMe. Go to Start, Run, type MSInfo32 and click OK. When it opens, click on Software, Running Tasks.
In the right pane you'll see everything that is presently running on your system.
To post the results here, go to Edit, Select All, Copy and Paste your results in your reply.
Good luck,

Hi Bert,
The anticipation of Wednesday's turkey dinner with all the fixings clogged your mind for a moment, that's all. You'll be fine by Thursday, I'm sure.
BTW: Will there be pumpkin pie? If so, please save some for me. I like it with a small dollop of whipped cream, please.

PS: I know Thanksgiving is on Thursday, but Bert's family is celebrating Wednesday evening so they can all be together.

gmt.exe c:\program files\common That one needs to be removed as fast as possible and it is difficult. It is part of Gator and can slow down the computer. Just had to deal with one yesterday, played in the registry quite a while getting it all.
cmesys.exe c:\program files\common files\cmeii\cmesys.exe is SPYWARE. Dump it.
Ssdpsrv.exe is the file that starts the UPnP server.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VETMSG9X.EXE Mail alerting for InoculateIT real-time virus protection.
wmiexe.exe can be read about here:

Nana, lots of Whipped Cream, Turkey, Ham. Got a nice carrot cake on the kitchen counter now.

Thanks a lot Bert.
I removed all of them, but still have one problem. Whenever I run Scandisk, it never completes, and gives me the messgae that I should stop some programs at the background. Even though I stop most of them, it continues to give me the same message. What is the problem.
Manojo
P.S. I shut down my computer improperly, so that ScanDisk starts at startup. Logically, it should complete, as no programs are open. But it doesn't somehow finish.
Manojo,
It's easiest to run scandisk in Safe Mode. If you want to run it in normal mode, make sure you turn off your anti-virus software and your screen saver.
I agree that it should finish when it has started after an improper shutdown. I don't know what to suggest about that. Maybe someone else does.
